10.06.2020 - Bruneian Male Charged for 27 offences of giving bribes to a Custom Officer

Reginalo Choong Cheng Jian, a 34 year-old Bruneian male, was today charged with committing twenty seven (27) offences under section 6(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 131. 

The Defendant is alleged to have corruptly given gratification of money on 27 different occasions in sums ranging from $50.00 to $500.00 as inducement or reward to one government officer so as not to take action against the defendant for committing offences under the Customs Order, 2006. Investigations conducted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau revealed that the offences were committed between 24th October 2017 and 4 th March 2018. 

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Hafizah Binti Ahmad applied to the court for all the charges to be read. The Honourable Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu set the matter for further mention for the Defendant’s plea to be recorded on 12th August 2020.

If found guilty, the Defendant is liable to a maximum sentence of $30,000 fine and imprisonment of 7 years for each charge.
